Happy New Year, friends!! I hope you enjoyed your holiday and some time off! I’m looking forward to my journey this year both personally and with Design by Occasion – I’ll talk more about this on a separate post but this weekend was spent purging, cleaning, and re-organizing our home office. It was quite the chore but it desperately needed to be done! I think it’s safe to say that when the new year approaches, we tend to tackle refreshing our home, after taking down all the holiday decor. Since we knew we would be spending New Year’s Eve with my relatives in NY, we took down all of our Christmas decor the day after Christmas. We didn’t want to come back home on the first of the new year to have to deal with it. Besides, we have a tradition to start the new year with a clean home – a fresh start and a fresh look!
With my first post of 2019, I wanted to share four easy ways that’ll make any space in your home feel new again and you can refresh your decor without spending a ton of money!
#1. Refresh your space with fresh flowers or potted plants.
I think it’s a no-brainer that adding plants or flowers (any time of the year) in a room, instantly freshens up a space in your home. It’s a quick and simple. I arranged an all-white floral arrangement and I was surprised to see tulips at the grocery store this time of year. There’s nothing like a pop of spring vibes to make a room feel cheerful!
#2. Refresh your Home Decor.
After putting away all the Christmas decor, you are left with your living space feeling a bit empty and blah. The easiest way to refresh a room in your home is to use and/or rearrange what you already have and mix up some new. Our ottoman tray is one of the primary places I like to start with when giving our living room a refresh. It’s the first thing people see when walking into that room and I like to style it using a variety of accessories.
Since one of my Christmas presents was a Target gift card, I purchased this cast metal floral gold stand. I had know clue it was to hold jewelry! I thought it was a pretty sculptural-type decor accessory and placed it on our ottoman tray. I like how it adds more of the “floral” vibe to the tray.
For our living room side tables, I pulled decor pieces I had and arranged them in a new way.
Who says cake stands should just be to serve cake? I took my small cake stand I purchased a while back from Home Goods, topped it with a wood bead strand and these votive candle holders. The elevation of the stand gives this vignette more interest than having the candle holders and beads lay on a flat tray. Alongside it, I placed this Calcite Geode.
On the opposite side of the sofa, I swapped out a blush pink vase I once had there and replaced it with this trio set of matte white stoneware cylinder vases.
For our Etagere shelf, I replaced our decorative balls (shown here) with these gold and white spheres. Sorry but I couldn’t find them on the Pier 1 site so that I can link them for you.
#3. Swap out your Decorative Throw Pillows
Refreshen your sofa, accent chairs, or your bed with a simple touch by swapping out your decorative throw pillows. By doing this, you can introduce a new color or add a fresh new pattern which in turn can add a different style to a room.
I scored a pair of these toss pillows at HomeGoods for $19.99!
#4. Don’t just store your books – decorate with them.
Books have a way of breathing life into a space. Whether you are accessorizing your cocktail table with books, your built-in bookshelf, a vignette, console or credenza, you can rearrange your books in a more uniform or colorful way. Add visual interest by arranging books by color in a linear rainbow of hues. The alternative, is grouping neutral-toned books that creates a natural subdued variation in tone.
For some of my books, I remove the jacket because the hardcovers are much prettier and fit nicely into my decor aesthetic. Another way to refresh a space is to use your books for decorative purposes. Stack a few books and use them to style up a few decor objects atop.
Ultimately, restyling is a great way to refresh your space!
