Hello readers! If you follow my blog and my instagram feed, than you already know that I’ve been talking about our master bedroom that was getting a much needed makeover. Well friends, I am happy to say it’s finally complete and we are ecstatic with how it came out! I collaborated with my sister, JoAnn of Inspiration in Stages who helped with paint, decor and furnishing selections. You guys, my sister has a great eye for design – check out her fantastic home office space she designed and decorated!
I told my sister I wanted the room to feel clean, modern and dreamy. That may have not given her much to go on, until I found these two items. I was drawn to the muted colors and pattern, as well as the gold accent. So a monochromatic color palette with a combination of gold and chrome accents was the design for this master bedroom! We are happy to share with you the end result…
After 10-years of living in this home, this room was in a desperate need of a face lift and because of that, it’s no surprise as to why I don’t have “before” pictures to show you but I can tell you that those who have seen the reveal say the same thing…“what a transformation”! Now envision Sophia of the TV show, The Golden Girls speaking as she is ready to tell you a story…“picture it”…a massive masculine bed that had a combination of dark wood and brown leather, a paint color that is typically used when someone is trying to flip a house to appeal to the masses, worn out wall-to-wall carpet and black furniture. And let’s not forget a ceiling fan that was better suited for an office space than for a bedroom. Over the years, each room in the house has had a makeover and it was due time for this room to finally be a calming place to retreat to.
In order to have more space on top of the nightstands, I told my sister I wanted wall sconces and I love that these came with the option of cord covers! Oh, do you see my DIY painting above the bed? Well let me tell you the story behind that. There is actually a window behind that painting! Yes, a window that faces the side of our neighbors house. We used to have curtains in the bedroom but I found that when you have carpet, it brought more dust and having a curtain behind a bed was such a waste (especially when we never drawn them open) and not to mention, they were nothing but a dust collector. I told my sister I wish there wasn’t a window there and how I wish I could cover the window completely. Note, rearranging the bed to another wall was not an option, due to space issues. So my sister told me to cover it with a picture frame. At first thought, I didn’t know how that would look but then thought that’s clever and she may be on to something so I grabbed an old picture frame to see what it would look like and loved it! Of course that picture frame was not the right style or look I was after so I was on the hunt for artwork instead. Two returns later, I was disappointed that I could not find the right color or size I needed so I texted my sister and she suggested to just paint my own and so I did!
A couple of days ago, I instagrammed this picture. Because I hung a canvas verses a picture frame, when the morning sun appears, it reflects through the art work, creating an illuminating effect of what appears to look like a sunrise and when the late afternoon sun goes down, half of the painting reflects a beautiful sunset. It truly is the prettiest thing to look at!
My sister chose an accent fabric that mimicked the pattern of this 3-tier tray (my inspiration for the room) that would be used for two accent bed pillows but they weren’t made in time for the shoot so I’ll have to post a “part 2” reveal!
I knew I wanted to have a makeup vanity in the space with a large mirror that makes a statement. I can’t tell you how great it is to get ready in the morning now!
This white lacquer desk was transformed for a place to display my perfume bottles and the two spacious drawers, with acrylic tray inserts holds my makeup in an organized way. Between hair and makeup, getting ready has never been easier!
When the carpet installers ripped out the old carpet, we were stunned to see that we had hardwood floors! Say what?! I’ve been longing for hardwood floors on the upper level of the house! When we installed hardwood floors in the downstairs living and dining rooms several years ago, we were told that they were not hardwood floors but subfloors. Nevertheless, it was in pretty bad shape and while it would have been nice to know if they could have been restored, there was no time for that.
This room had only one closet and it was too small and narrow to be shared and since my better half preferred folded clothes verses hung, there was an open wall section to the right (shown above in the “before” pic) that had floor to ceiling Ikea cubbies. It was unattractive but functional – a temporary fix that turned permanent. We knew purchasing a new dresser would not solve our storage issue so having a shared custom designed built-in closet was an agreeable solution and we now scratch our heads as to why we didn’t think of this sooner?!
Since I still needed drawer space, I have this middle section here.
Getting into my walk-in closet before was a bit challenging and since the shelves for my shoes were up high, I had to have a stool nearby so that I can reach and grab a pair. My purses were tucked in a cubby because there was no other place to house them. Now when I walk in my closet, I have designated sections for my shoes, dresses, blouses, slacks and jeans. The top shelf area is used for items that I don’t use everyday like my summer hats.
Since I love statement necklaces and own several, I wanted to display them rather than keeping them in a box. I knew this side of the closet wall was the perfect place to have these necklace hooks installed, so I decided to give that side of the wall a feminine look by using a stencil of a rose pattern to give it that wallpaper look.
We can’t thank my sister enough for all her help and just LOVE how the room turned out!!
