In today’s modern world, where technology dominates our lives, there is something undeniably captivating about the charm and allure of a classic, well-curated library. It evokes images of grandeur, intellectual pursuits, and the joy of losing oneself within the pages of a good book.
The Quest for Personalization: Why a Custom Bookshelf?
Our home is a reflection of our personalities, tastes, and experiences. While store-bought furniture can certainly serve its purpose, there’s something magical about owning a piece that’s tailored to your exact needs and preferences. Prior to the installation of the custom bookshelf, we had a gold Etagere Shelf that was centered on this wall. It served its purpose for five years however, with our growing book collection of Biographies and Memoirs, Art and Photography Books, Home and Garden books, and Travel books, we needed more shelving. In addition, I felt this side of the room needed balance since we had a custom wine/dry bar installed on the opposite wall – it felt heavier-looking on one side of the room. These factors were the driving force behind our decision to invest in a custom bookshelf. A built-in bookcase is more than just a storage solution; it’s an opportunity to showcase your personal style and enhance the ambiance of your living space. The bookcase creates a visually stunning and inviting environment.
Ensuring that the bookshelf would remain timeless as trends come and go, I envisioned a bookshelf that seamlessly integrated with our living room’s layout and allowed us to proudly display our book collection, decorative objects, and travel mementos. By opting for customization, we were able to optimize the space by utilizing wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling dimensions and dictate the materials, and overall design to match our existing décor and the look of the other built-ins that were custom made for this space. The bookshelf was designed with a combination of open shelving and closed cabinets to cater to both our display needs and storage requirements.
The final rendering of the custom bookshelf included a 4″ Fascia for a Library Ladder. By integrating a library ladder, it not only enables easy access to even the highest shelves, it adds an aesthetic appeal – creating a romantic and literary ambiance in your space. After the bookshelf installation was complete, the books were added and the shelves were styled, we stepped back and wondered if we should still continue with the idea of adding a library ladder or forgo it? The alternative is to use the fascia as a place to install three picture frame lights to cast down soft, ambient lighting to highlight certain focal points, casting a warm glow over the ensemble during evenings.
Embrace Elegance and Functionality
Styling as an Art Form: Finding Balance and Harmony that is both practical and visually appealing
With the bookshelf in place, the next exciting step was styling it to transform it from a piece of furniture into a work of art. The styling process was an exercise in balance and harmony, where I aimed to create visual interest without overwhelming the senses.
I started by arranging our book collection in a mix of horizontal and vertical orientations. This seemingly small variation added a dynamic visual element to the shelves. Interspersed between the books are personal keepsakes and travel souvenirs, each with its own story to tell. An orchid plant found its place on the overhang of the base cabinets, adding a touch of vibrancy and life to the display.
To prevent the bookshelf from feeling cluttered, I employed the “rule of threes” principle – grouping items in threes for an aesthetically pleasing arrangement. Additionally, I played with varying heights and textures to create depth and dimension.
By having this custom bookshelf in our living room, it automatically creates an Intimate Reading Area. Imagine curling up in a cozy chair or on the sofa, surrounded by your favorite books and bathed in soft light from nearby windows. Enhance the comfort with a small side table for your cup of tea or coffee, and a warm throw blanket. This living space becomes a sanctuary for relaxation, contemplation, and a space for an intimate social gathering.
