Channel that tropical elegance with a modern take on the Tropics
Last night, I posted a video on instagram that showed close-up details of this Tropical-inspired birthday dinner party I created for my spouse. It was a fun process of putting together inspiration for this stylish summer tropical-theme celebration. I envisioned a tablescape as tropical with a dash of elegance – keeping the elements of the setup understated.
Whether it’s a summer celebration you are hosting indoors or a sophisticated backyard affair, keep reading for tips on how I transformed our dining room table into a little slice of that island paradise feel.
The look of luxe: Dinnerware + Linens
The first thing to do when creating a theme like this – is to draw inspiration from the tropics with colors, food, flowers, and the spirit. My color palette for this tropical-inspired theme included hues of forest greens, black, crisp whites, and gold for that jewel-tone element.
Modern details were at the forefront of this design inspiration. I wanted to capture a balance of elegance and fun that captures the spirit of the tropics. Gold accents is not only a refined elegance, but it also puts a glamorous twist on a tropical feel. Each place setting included white & gold dinnerware and flatware. To break up the gold, I paired black wine glasses and white vintage glassware and tied in those colors with a white and black scalloped-edge dinner napkins. While I could have went with a tropical table linen motif, it would have been a bit challenging to keep with the modern vibe I was after so I decided to instead, use a black and white striped runner.
Tropical Flowers + Flamingos
For the table centerpiece, palms, ferns, monstera, philodendron, and orchids were used to create this tropical arrangement. For a cute touch of whimsy, I found pink flamingos in the dollar section of Target and spray painted them with a white lacquer finish, to complement the rest of the table decor.
Infuse the right decor
Your table decor plays a large role in dictating the atmosphere of your celebration. Decorate with tropical style is easy using some home decor pieces you may already own. For that botanical vibe, I used black hurricane candle holders, gold leaf vases and palm tree candle holders (similar ones found here or these would work too).
A show-stopping balloon backdrop
Helium-filled balloons are not just for kids. For a fabulous effect and to add a touch of glam, mix them with other balloon colors. I hung this beautiful balloon garland on our dining room accent wall as the backdrop. You can add fresh flowers and/or foilage to your balloon arch. This focal point was really big, really bold, stole the show!
Tropical Music Playlist
To add an exotic feel to the ambiance, don’t forget the background music. Simply go to your Spotify and type in ‘Steel band music’ or if you have an Amazon Alexa, you can tell her to play that genre of music.
