When it came to how I was going to style our table for Halloween, I had an idea in my mind as the direction I wanted to go. However, it changed about a month ago when we went to visit our local landscape nursery to purchase some fall mums and pumpkins to decorate our front porch with. Attached to the outdoor nursery is a store that holds home decor and decorations. There I found, these glamorous black pumpkins, accented with gold glitter, in an accordion-like design. Would you believe they are made out of paper?! It was then that I knew the theme for this Halloween tablescape.
For such a spirited holiday, I considered a subtle spook and understated elegance that comes with a classic black-and-gold palette. The elegant tones of black-and-gold can inspire a sophisticated party. Mix in crystal candle holders, gilded gold dinnerware and cutlery and suddenly spooky is stunning. Whether you’re hosting a big and elaborate Halloween party or an intimate, yet festive dinner gathering, keep reading this post for ideas on colors, floral choices, table essentials, and decor.
- Sophisticated Pumpkins
Since these decorative pumpkins are not supplied by a major retailer, you can create similar ones if you don’t mind a little DIY project. You can purchase black hanging accordion lanterns or honeycomb ball hanging lanterns and before you open them, paint the pleats in a glitter gold paint (you find in any craft store). For the stem, you can break it off from a real pumpkin, paint it using the same glitter paint and hot glue it to the top of the accordion lantern. Another option is to take real pumpkins and spray paint (or paint) them in a high gloss black paint and cover the stem in glue and apply gold glitter to it.
For a bit of natural texture on the table, amongst all the glam, I laid Spanish moss underneath each pumpkin.
2. Spooky Chic Napkin Folding
Get creative and impress your guests as they pull up their chair with a dinner napkin folded into the shape of a bat. To learn how you can do this, check out this video for the tutorial.
3. Gilded Tableware and Muted Printed Fabric
Gold tones and accents bring out that jewel-like element. Mix and match your dinner and dessert plates in coordinating patterns and similar gold tones…it can disguise the fact that there’s not enough plates for the whole crowd (wink)! Glam up the drink-ware with gold rim clear glasses – making it look classy and add to that dark and mysterious vibe with midnight black glasses. Gold flatware, like my vintage ones completes the place setting.
There are times when I cannot find the right tablecloth to coordinate with the look I’m after so many times I visit my local fabric store instead. Here, I used cut fabric that I had for a couple of years now. It’s a black fabric with a velvet damask print – it showcases a luxurious aesthetic.
4. Skip the floral centerpiece
Add white and/or ivory blooms to brighten up your tablescape. I went with two different types of blooms – ivory roses and white carnations, keeping it soft, clean and fresh looking. It also added a striking contrast to all the black and gold tones.
5. Elevate the elegance with candles
There’s nothing like adding a cluster of candles to illuminate a table that instantly makes it look sophisticated. For a dramatic statement, I added clusters of tall and shorter clear crystal taper candle holders as well as tealight candle holders for dimension. To boost the lighting ambiance, I also used a crystal candelabra. I used black & gold candlesticks, and gold glittered tealights.
6. Skip the creepy crawlers
Complete your table with festive Halloween table decor by skipping the eerie spooks. Instead, a couple of realistic feathered black crows prop decor will do.
Celebrate with sophistication by inviting your friends or host a swanky ladies’ night in your home, to done their chicest little black dresses for a fancy Halloween get-together!
